Mawlid: Should We Celebrate It?

In few days time, Muslims prepare to celebrate the Mawlid (the birthday) of our Prophet salla Allahu alaihi wa sallam. However, is such a celebration permissible or forbidden? To know the answer of this question, we have to ask a number of other questions and answer them. Did the Prophet salla Allahu alaihi wa sallam celebrate his own birthday which was as some say on the 12th of Rabe’e Al Awal?

The companions who loved him most, did they celebrate it? Those who came after them, did they celebrate it? If the best 3 generations didn’t celebrate it, is it possible that we know more than them? What was not part of our religion then, can never be part of our religion today as it is an innovation. ~ Shaykh Assim Alhakeem


WORSHIP THE CREATOR, NOT THE CREATION

1Asking Allaah by the virtue of So and so

 

It is not permissible to ask Allaah by the virtue of anyone, not even by the virtue of the Prophets or Messengers or awliyaa or righteous people and NOT even by virtue of Prophet Muhammed (pbuh).

 No one can compel Allaah to do anything. It is NOT permissible to ask Him in any way except by His Names and Attributes, as Allaah says (interpretation of the meaning):

“And (all) the Most Beautiful Names belong to Allaah, so call on Him by them”

[al-A’raaf 7:180].

 With regard to saying to the occupant of a grave, “O So and so, help me,” this is obviously shirk, because it is a supplication to someone other than Allaah.

Asking by the virtue of someone is a means to shirk, and calling upon a created being is shirk in worship.

 And Allaah knows best.

These behaviors are dangerous and relying upon anyone other than Allah swt is innovation.  Many people give the misnomer of Mohammedians to Muslims with the idea that we worship the Prophet, pbuh.  However the Quran is full of comands from Allah to not worship any one except HIM and that no one is of any avail except HIM.


Worship none but Allah. I fear for you the punishment of a painful day.’ (Qur’an, 11:26)

Say: ‘Do you worship, besides Allah, something which has no power to harm or help you when Allah is the All-Hearing, the All-Knowing?’ (Qur’an, 5:76)

At What Level Is Your Salaah?

Consider yourself and how you perform your prayers.  What level do you REALLY fit into?  What excuses do you have?  It does not take so much time out of our life to perform wudu carefuly and stand in prayer with kushu, or sincere concentration, seeking the blessings and guidance from Allah.  We are the ones who benefit from prayer, so let us make a more sincere effort.

Ibn al-Qayyim (rahimahullaah) said: And mankind, with regard to their performance of prayer are in five levels:


The First: The level of the one who is negligent and wrongs his soul: He is the one who falls short in performing wudhoo properly, performing the prayer upon its time and within its specified limits, and in fulfilling its essential pillars.

The Second: The one who guards his prayers upon their proper times and within their specified limits, fulfils their essential pillars and performs his wudhoo with care. However, his striving (in achieving the above) is wasted due whisperings in his prayer so he is taken away by thoughts and ideas.

The Third: The one who guards his prayers within the specified limits, fulfils their essential pillars and strives with himself to repel the whisperings, thoughts and ideas. He is busy struggling against his enemy (Shaytaan) so that he does not steal from the prayer. On account of this he is engaged in (both) prayer and jihaad.

The Fourth: The one who stands for the prayer , completes and perfects its due rights, its essential pillars, performs it within its specified limits and his heart becomes engrossed in safeguarding its rights and specified limits, so that nothing is wasted from it. His whole concern is directed towards its establishment, its completion and its perfection, as it should be. His heart is immersed in the prayer and in enslavement to his Lord the Exalted.

The Fifth: The one who stands for the prayer like the one mentioned above. However, on top of this, he has taken and placed his heart in front of his Lord Azzawajall, looking towards Him with his heart with anticipation, (his heart) filled with His love and His might, as if he sees and witnesses Allaah. The whisperings, thoughts and ideas have vanished and the coverings which are between him and his Lord are raised. What is between this person and others with respect to the prayer, is superior and greater than what is between the heavens and the earth. This person is busy with his Lord Azzawajall, delighted with Him.

The First type will be punished, the second type will be held to account, the third will have his sins and shortcomings expiated, the fourth will be rewarded and the fifth will be close to his Lord, because he will receive the portion of the one who makes his prayer the delight and pleasure of his eye. Whoever makes his prayer,the delight and pleasure of his eye, will have the nearness to his Lord Azzawajall made the delight and pleasure of his eye in the hereafter. He will also be made a pleasure to the eye in this world since whoever makes Allaah the pleasure of his eye in this world, every other eye will become delighted and pleased with him

Prayer is an essential pillar of islam and is also what differentiates between a mu’min and a kaafir. May Allah (SWT) aid us in perfecting our salaah (ameen).


Why Did God Create Us?

Why did Allaah create Mankind
when He knows what our Destiny will be,
in Paradise or Hell?
 

Knowledge of the purpose for which Allaah created mankind may answer many questions that the atheists raise in order to confuse people, and by which some Muslims may be influenced. These issues include the idea that Allaah created mankind in order to put some of them in Paradise and the others in Hell! This is a mistaken notion. It is not for this purpose that Allaah created mankind and brought them into being.

The brother who asked this question – and whoever wants to know the truth – should realize that the purpose behind the creation of man and the creation of heaven and earth, is that Allaah, may He be glorified and exalted, may be known and that His Oneness (Tawheed) may be affirmed and that He may be obeyed.

Allaah says (interpretation of the meaning):

“And I (Allaah) created not the jinn and mankind except that they should worship Me (Alone)”
[al-Dhaariyaat 51:56].

Ibn Katheer (may Allaah have mercy on him) said:

i.e., I have only created them so that I might command them to worship Me, not because I am in need of them.

Ali ibn Abi Talhah said, narrating from Ibn Abbaas: “except that they should worship Me (Alone)” means: except that they should affirm their servitude to Me, willingly or unwillingly.

This was the view favoured by Ibn Jareer.

Many people are confused about what is wanted from the slaves of Allaah, which is adhering to His religion which He has chosen for them, and what is wanted for them, which is rewarding the obedient and punishing the disobedient. This is part of Allaah’s decree which will never be altered or changed.

Performing the Sunan and regular non-obligatory prayers (rawaatib):

 It is narrated on the authority of Umm Habeeba that she said: “I heard the Messenger of Allah say ‘There is no Muslim slave who prays twelve units of voluntary prayer besides the obligatory ones to Allah every day except that Allah builds for him a house in paradise‘” [Muslim:835] They are: two before fajr (dawn) prayers; four before zuhr (afternoon) prayers and two afterwards; two after maghrib (evening) prayer and two after ishaa` (night) prayers.

The Forenoon Prayer (Salaat al-Duhaa):

It is narrated on the authority of Abu Dharr  that the Prophet said “Every morning charity is due for every one of your joints: every tasbeeh (i.e. saying subhanallah) is charity; every tahmeed (i.e. saying al-hamdu-lillah) is charity; every tahleel (i.e. saying laa ilaaha illallah) is charity; every takbeer (i.e. saying Allahu akbar) is charity; every act of enjoining good is charity and every act of prohibiting evil is charity; and doing two units of prayer in the forenoon suffices all that.” [Muslim:1671]

The Night Prayer (Qiyam al-layl):

It is narrated on the authority of Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah was asked what the best prayer is after the obligatory ones. He said: “The best prayer after the obligatory prayers is the prayer in the middle of the night.” [Muslim: 2756]

The Witr (’odd’) Prayer:

It is narrated on the authority of Ibn ‘Umar  that the Prophet said: “Make your last prayer at night an odd number” [Muslim: 998-1755]

The Pre-Conditions of Dua (Supplication)

When My servants ask thee concerning Me, I am indeed close (to them). I listen to the prayer of every suppliant when he calleth on Me; Let them also, with a will, listen to My call, and believe in Me; That they may walk in the right way. [Surah Al-Baqarah: Ayah 186]

We know that Dua (supplication) is a type of worship, so it is essential to discuss the pre-conditions that are necessary if we wish for our Dua to be answered. Just like our Salat (prayer) will not be accepted until we perform the necessary pre-requisites, such as wudu (ablution), facing the Qiblah and covering the body. Likewise our dua will likely not be accepted until some pre-requisites are met.

Let’s see what Allah (SWT) tells us about Dua for surely “Allah’s promise is the truth, and whose word can be truer than Allah’s?” (4:122)

The Realisation that Only Allah Responds to Dua

“Who else is there that responds to the call of the one in distress when he calls out, and He removes evil from him, and makes you inheritors of the earth ? Is there any other God besides Allah? Little is it that you remember!” (27:62)

We must fully believe that only Allah (SWT) is capable of hearing our prayer, and only Allah (SWT) has the power to grant us what we desire.

Sincerity in Dua to Allah Alone

“Will you call upon other than Allah if you are truthful?” (6:40)

“Those whom you call besides Allah are slaves like yourselves” (7:194)

“And those who you ask besides Him can neither come to your aid, nor can they help themselves!” (7: 197)

After we realize that only Allah (SWT) can respond to our Dua, then it makes sense that we pray to Allah (SWT) alone. We must be careful only to ask Allah (SWT). Idols, the sun to trees, animals, men, pious people, prophets, or even angels have no power to grant any of our Dua’s.

Let’s see what Prophet Muhammad said about Dua in the authentic Hadiths. “And he speaks not of his own desire. It is but a revelation revealed to him.” (53:3-4)

The Presence of an Attentive Heart

Prophet Muhammad said “Make dua to Allah in a state that you are certain that your dua will be responded to, and know that Allah does not respond to a dua that originates from a negligent, inattentive heart” (Tirmidhi)

This shows that our Dua must be made with a mindful heart, such that we know exactly what we are asking for, and who we are asking from, for Allah (SWT) is the Lord of Honor!

Purity of One’s Sustenance

Prophet Muhammad said “Oh you who believe! Eat from the pure and good foods We have given you” Then the Prophet mentioned a traveler on a long journey, who is dishevelled and dusty, and he stretches forth his hands to the sky , saying “Oh my Lord! O my Lord!” – while his food is unlawful, his drink is unlawful, his clothing his unlawful, and he is nourished unlawfully; how can he be answered?” (Muslim, Ahmad)

Therefore, among the necessary conditions of our Dua to be accepted is the purity and lawfulness of our food.

Lack of Hastiness

Prophet Muhammad said “You will responded to as long as you are not hasty, meaning that a person says, ‘I have prayed and prayed and my prayer has not been answered!’” (Bukhari, Muslim)

This shows that Dua should be continuous, and that we should avoid giving up our Dua because it has not been responded to. For Allah (SWT) is The Wise and we know that no Dua is ever wasted! This does not mean however, that we cannot pray that our Dua be answered quickly, for it has been narrated that the Prophet prayed for rain and said “quickly, and not delayed..” (Ibn Majah)

Summary

The above are conditions that can aid us in getting our Dua responded to. The response of our Dua depends on the Will of Allah (SWT), and He responds to whom He pleases. Therefore it is possible that the Dua of a disbeliever who does not meet any of these conditions is responded to, and it is possible that a Muslim who fulfills all of these conditions is not responded to. However without a doubt, if we strive to fulfill and put into practice all of these factors we will have a much greater chance of our Dua being answered.

We also know that a Dua of a believer is never wasted. If our dua is not granted and we are patient then Allah (SWT) either turns away some evil that was going to inflict us, or Allah (SWT) reserves its rewards for the hereafter. On the day of judgement when we see the huge rewards we get for our Dua’s not being answered, we will wish none of our Dua’s got granted on earth! So even if our Dua in not answered in this life we should hope for its rewards in the next.

One of the main purposes of Dua is that we have an attentive heart towards Allah (SWT). That we turn to Him and acknowledge His Power. This however requires patience, purity and sincerity. We need to call out to Allah (SWT) with a sincere heart, for verily Allah (SWT) does not accept any Dua made from a neglectful heart. How sincere is our heart? Right now the choice is ours!

We ask Allah (SWT) the Most High, the All-Powerful, to teach us that which will benefit us, and to benefit us by that which we learn. May Allah (SWT) grant blessings and peace to our Prophet Muhammad and his family and companions.

Mistakes Made On Eid Days

Praise be to Allaah, we seek His help and His forgiveness. We seek refuge with Allaah from the evil of our own souls and from our bad deeds. Whomsoever Allaah guides will never be led astray, and whomsoever Allaah leaves astray, no one can guide. I bear witness that there is no god but Allaah, and I bear witness that Muhammad is His slave and Messenger.

Mistakes made on Eid

We would like to point out some things that some people do out of ignorance of the laws of Allaah and the Sunnah of the Messenger of Allaah (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him). These include the following: 

1 – The belief of some that it is prescribed to spend the night of Eid in worship. 
Some people believe that it is prescribed to spend the night of Eid in worship. This is a kind of innovation (bidah) that is not proven from the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him). Rather it was narrated in a daeef (weak) hadeeth which says, “Whoever stays up on the night of Eid, his heart will not die on the day when hearts die.” This hadeeth is not saheeh. It was narrated via two isnaads, one of which is mawdoo (fabricated) and the other is daeef jiddan (very weak). See Silsilat al-Ahaadeeth al-Daeefah wa’l-Mawdoo’ah by al-Albaani, 520, 521. 

It is not prescribed to single out the night of Eid to pray qiyaam to the exclusion of all other nights, unlike the one whose habit it is to pray qiyaam, in which case there is nothing wrong with him praying qiyaam on the night of Eid. 

2 – Visiting graves on the two Eid days. 

This is contrary to the purpose of Eid which is to express joy and happiness, and it goes against the teaching of the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) and the actions of the salaf. It comes under the general meaning of the Prophet prohibition on visiting graves on a specific day and making that like a festival, as the scholars stated. See Ahkaam al-Janaa’iz wa Bida’uha by al-Albaani, p. 219, 258. 

3 – Forsaking the jamaaah and sleeping late and missing the prayer. 

Unfortunately you see some of the Muslims missing the prayer and forsaking the jamaaah. The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said: “The covenant that stands between us and them is the prayer; whoever forsakes it is a kaafir.” Narrated by al-Tirmidhi, 2621; al-Nasaai, 463; classed as saheeh by al-Albaani in Saheeh al-Tirmidhi.
