Going into Debt is a harmful thing

Debt is a Very Serious Matter, Indeed
By Asma bint Shameem

In this materialistic world where the focus has become running after the whims and fulfilling whatsoever the heart desires, we tend to lose focus on our real goals and begin taking certain matters that are forbidden or discouraged in Islaam, too lightly.

And the matter of taking loans and being in debt is definitely one of them.
And I am NOT talking about taking an “interest based” loan. That is HARAAM for sure. The kind of loan I am talking about is one without interest……one that does NOT involve riba….. The kind that is allowed, yet discouraged in Islaam.
Many people have a very casual approach to being in debt and  take out loans, not for some urgent need but, because they want to expand their businesses or keep up with others in buying new cars or furniture or other temporary luxuries of this life.

Taking loans and being in debt is a GRAVE…..GRAVE matter. Islam takes the matter of debt very seriously and warns against it and urges the Muslim to avoid it as much as possible. And yet, we don’t see it as such.

1) The Prophet (Sal Allaahu Alaiyhi wa Sallam) used to seek protection from it

The Prophet (Sal Allaahu Alaiyhi wa Sallam) used to say in his prayer: “Allaahumma inni a’oodhi bika min al-ma’tham wa’l-maghram

(O Allaah, I seek refuge with You from sin and heavy debt).”

Someone said to him: “How often you seek refuge from heavy debt!” He said: “When a man gets into debt, he speak and tells lies, and he makes a promise and breaks it.” (Bukhaari and Muslim). Read the rest of this entry »

Rememberance of Allah

January 28, 2009

b7cc6c7c

Life, with all of its daily struggles, often drains us of our energy and weakens emotions and faith.  To counteract these effects it is necessary for one to seek guidance and support from our Creator.  Who else is better to help than the one who understands and knows us so intemately?

It was once given as an example during a seminar, that the carpenter who built our table knows best how much weight it can stand, how it is best used, and what will damage it.  Allah is this way with us.  He knows all about us and what we need and when we need it.  It may not seem this way to us when we are wanting to gain sucess in this life, or to be able to purchase new things and can’t, or when we are suffering from an illness or other calamities.

ipray

Many times we are so tied up with what goes on in our daily lives we forget to acknowledge all of the many, many blessings that Allah swt has bestowed upon us.  Do we see the death of a loved one as a tragedy or a reality, and possibly a cloud with a silver lining to it?  If our car is repossessed, we can see it as a hassle and big problem, or think that maybe that car was a lemon and could have caused a deadly accident and Allah in his wisdom is protecting us from that.  We cannot always  understand  the works of God or the way He directs our lives.

Is it not appropriate then that we turn to Him in remembrance, both thankful and with prayers to help guide us, keep us safe and to bless us with what is good?  There is something that we can do daily and that is thikr and supplications (du’a) .  For many of us using a small book called Husn al Muslim is both a reminder of the du’a that the Sahaba and the Prophet pbuh used to say, and a guide for us to memorize from.

For those who do not have access to purchasing the book from a store, here is a site which offers this book in pdf format.  Please visit it and see also what other links may be useful for your needs.

Du’a for facing trials

January 24, 2009

Allahumma inni as ‘aluka fi’lal khayraat wa tark al-munkaraat, wa hubb al-masaakeen, wa an taghfira lee wa tarhamanee wa tatooba ‘alay. Wa in aradta bi ‘ibaadika fitnan, faqbidni ilayka ghayra maftoon.

[Oh Allah, I ask You [to enable me] to do good deed and avoid evil deed, and to love the poor, and [I ask You] to forgive me, to have mercy on me and accept my repentance. If You decree that some trial should befall Your slaves, then take me to You [i.e., cause me to die] without having me be subjected to that trial.]

Du’a

January 18, 2009

The Pre-Conditions of Dua (Supplication)

When My servants ask thee concerning Me, I am indeed close (to them). I listen to the prayer of every suppliant when he calleth on Me; Let them also, with a will, listen to My call, and believe in Me; That they may walk in the right way. [Surah Al-Baqarah: Ayah 186]

We know that Dua (supplication) is a type of worship, so it is essential to discuss the pre-conditions that are necessary if we wish for our Dua to be answered. Just like our Salat (prayer) will not be accepted until we perform the necessary pre-requisites, such as wudu (ablution), facing the Qiblah and covering the body. Likewise our dua will likely not be accepted until some pre-requisites are met.

Let’s see what Allah (SWT) tells us about Dua for surely “Allah’s promise is the truth, and whose word can be truer than Allah’s?” (4:122)

praying pray dua supplication to god allah

The Realisation that Only Allah Responds to Dua

“Who else is there that responds to the call of the one in distress when he calls out, and He removes evil from him, and makes you inheritors of the earth ? Is there any other God besides Allah? Little is it that you remember!” (27:62)

We must fully believe that only Allah (SWT) is capable of hearing our prayer, and only Allah (SWT) has the power to grant us what we desire.

Sincerity in Dua to Allah Alone

“Will you call upon other than Allah if you are truthful?” (6:40)

“Those whom you call besides Allah are slaves like yourselves” (7:194)

“And those who you ask besides Him can neither come to your aid, nor can they help themselves!” (7: 197)

After we realize that only Allah (SWT) can respond to our Dua, then it makes sense that we pray to Allah (SWT) alone. We must be careful only to ask Allah (SWT). Idols, the sun to trees, animals, men, pious people, prophets, or even angels have no power to grant any of our Dua’s.

Let’s see what Prophet Muhammad said about Dua in the authentic Hadiths. “And he speaks not of his own desire. It is but a revelation revealed to him.” (53:3-4)

The Presence of an Attentive Heart

Prophet Muhammad said “Make dua to Allah in a state that you are certain that your dua will be responded to, and know that Allah does not respond to a dua that originates from a negligent, inattentive heart” (Tirmidhi)

This shows that our Dua must be made with a mindful heart, such that we know exactly what we are asking for, and who we are asking from, for Allah (SWT) is the Lord of Honor!

Purity of One’s Sustenance

Prophet Muhammad said “Oh you who believe! Eat from the pure and good foods We have given you” Then the Prophet mentioned a traveler on a long journey, who is dishevelled and dusty, and he stretches forth his hands to the sky , saying “Oh my Lord! O my Lord!” – while his food is unlawful, his drink is unlawful, his clothing his unlawful, and he is nourished unlawfully; how can he be answered?” (Muslim, Ahmad)

Therefore, among the necessary conditions of our Dua to be accepted is the purity and lawfulness of our food.

Lack of Hastiness

Prophet Muhammad said “You will responded to as long as you are not hasty, meaning that a person says, ‘I have prayed and prayed and my prayer has not been answered!’” (Bukhari, Muslim)

This shows that Dua should be continuous, and that we should avoid giving up our Dua because it has not been responded to. For Allah (SWT) is The Wise and we know that no Dua is ever wasted! This does not mean however, that we cannot pray that our Dua be answered quickly, for it has been narrated that the Prophet prayed for rain and said “quickly, and not delayed..” (Ibn Majah)

Summary

The above are conditions that can aid us in getting our Dua responded to. The response of our Dua depends on the Will of Allah (SWT), and He responds to whom He pleases. Therefore it is possible that the Dua of a disbeliever who does not meet any of these conditions is responded to, and it is possible that a Muslim who fulfills all of these conditions is not responded to. However without a doubt, if we strive to fulfill and put into practice all of these factors we will have a much greater chance of our Dua being answered.

We also know that a Dua of a believer is never wasted. If our dua is not granted and we are patient then Allah (SWT) either turns away some evil that was going to inflict us, or Allah (SWT) reserves its rewards for the hereafter. On the day of judgement when we see the huge rewards we get for our Dua’s not being answered, we will wish none of our Dua’s got granted on earth! So even if our Dua in not answered in this life we should hope for its rewards in the next.

One of the main purposes of Dua is that we have an attentive heart towards Allah (SWT). That we turn to Him and acknowledge His Power. This however requires patience, purity and sincerity. We need to call out to Allah (SWT) with a sincere heart, for verily Allah (SWT) does not accept any Dua made from a neglectful heart. How sincere is our heart? Right now the choice is ours!

We ask Allah (SWT) the Most High, the All-Powerful, to teach us that which will benefit us, and to benefit us by that which we learn. May Allah (SWT) grant blessings and peace to our Prophet Muhammad and his family and companions.

All the glories are for Allah. And none has the right to be worshipped but Allah, And Allah is Great And there is neither Might nor Power Except with Allah).

You forgot, I have Allah

January 9, 2009

salah

One day a sister was visiting a new aquaintance.  As they got to know each other better, Amal asked her new friend, “Nadine, tell me about your husband, how did you meet?”  ”My husband and I divorced several years ago, al hamdulillah, but I am doing fine” said Nadine.

”Then surely you have the comfort and companionship of your children.  How many do you have?” ” I was never blessed with children either, al hamdulillah” replied Nadine.  Upon sensing the inner sorrow Amal tried to give comfort, “Oh I am sorry to hear that, I am sure you would have been a great mother.  Surely you have the comfort of your parents.”  ”Both of my parents have passed on from this life, al hamdulillah” said Nadine.

Shocked, Amal continued…”Well I guess you have the companionship of your brothers and sisters.  I remember you told me you had a large family.  Inshallah they visit you often.”

“All of my siblings live in different countries, I am here alone al hamdulillah” replied Nadine again.

“Stop!” shouted Amal, “Its too much to bear hearing all of this. You are so alone here in this country!  All what you have are  your co-workers and a few good friends.  How can you stand it!

Patiently Nadine looked at her new friend and considered her words carefully then replied, “But Amal you have forgotten one important thing,  I have Allah subhanna wa ta’ala and He is enough of a sustainer for my affairs, Al hamdulillah.

يَا أَيُّهَا الَّذِينَ آمَنُواْ اسْتَعِينُواْ بِالصَّبْرِ وَالصَّلاَةِ إِنَّ اللّهَ مَعَ الصَّابِرِينَ
O ye who believe! seek help with patient perseverance and prayer; for Allah is with those who patiently persevere.

Supplication for one afflicted by a calamity

‘To Allah we belong and unto Him is our return. O Allah, recompense me for my affliction and replace it for me with something better.’

Allah ta’ala says in Suratul Baqarah ayat 155-156:

“And we shall surely test you with something of fear and hunger and a loss of wealth and lives and fruits, but give good tidings to the patient, Who, when disaster strikes them, say, ‘indeed we belong to Allah, and indeed to Him we will return’”

This story and the verse above encourage us to be patient with what Allah has chosen for us and to know that each of us has trial to face in this life.  What one person can deal with, another of us would say oh its unbearable, but we need to keep in mind the verse in the Quran where Allah swt tells us that no soul shall be burdened with more than what it can bear.   ”On no soul does God place a burden greater than it can bear .” —2:286

So if we feel we are at the end of our rope, we should realize, by placing faith in Allah swt, we have the best of sustainers and for sure He will give us  more rope as long as we hold on to our deen and our faith!
