The Muslim population in Britain has grown by more than 500,000 to 2.4 million in just four years, according to official research collated for The Times.

The population multiplied 10 times faster than the rest of society, the research by the Office for National Statistics reveals. In the same period the number of Christians in the country fell by more than 2 million.

Experts said that the increase was attributable to immigration, a higher birthrate and conversions to Islam during the period of 2004-2008, when the data was gathered. They said that it also suggested a growing willingness among believers to describe themselves as Muslims because the western reaction to war and terrorism had strengthened their sense of identity.

Muslim leaders have welcomed the growing population of their communities as academics highlighted the implications for British society, integration and government resources.

David Coleman, Professor of Demography at Oxford University, said: “The implications are very substantial. Some of the Muslim population, by no means all of them, are the least socially and economically integrated of any in the United Kingdom … and the one most associated with political dissatisfaction. You can’t assume that just because the numbers are increasing that all will increase, but it will be one of several reasonable suppositions that might arise.”

Professor Coleman said that Muslims would naturally reap collective benefits from the increase in population. “In the growth of any population … [its] voice is regarded as being stronger in terms of formulating policy, not least because we live in a democracy where most people in most religious groups and most racial groups have votes. That necessarily means their opinions have to be taken and attention to be paid to them.”

There are more than 42.6 million Christians in Britain, according to the Office for National Statistics, whose figures were obtained through the quarterly Labour Force Survey of around 53,000 homes. But while the biggest Christian population is among over-70s bracket, for Muslims it is the under-4s.

Ceri Peach, Professor of Social Geography at Manchester University, said that the rapid growth of the Muslim population posed challenges for society. “The groups with the strongest belief in the family and cohesion are those such as the Pakistanis and Bangladeshis. They have got extremely strong family values but it goes together with the sort of honour society and other kinds of attributes which people object to,” he said. “So you are dealing with a pretty complex situation.”

Professor Peach said that the high number of Muslims under the age of 4 — 301,000 as of September last year — would benefit Britain’s future labour market through taxes that would subsequently contribute to sustaining the country’s ageing population. He added, though, that it would also put pressure on housing and create a growing demand for schools. “I think housing has traditionally been a difficulty because the country is simultaneously short of labour and short of housing. So if you get people to fill vacancies in your labour force you also need to find places for them to live,” he said.

Muhammad Abdul Bari, general secretary of the Muslim Council of Britain, predicted that the number of mosques in Britain would multiply from the present 1,600 in line with the rising Islamic population. He said the greater platform that Muslims would command in the future should not be perceived as a threat to the rest of society.

“We each have our own set of beliefs. This should really be a source of celebration rather than fear as long as we all clearly understand that we must abide by the laws of this country regardless of the faith we belong to,” he said.

The Cohesion Minister, Sadiq Khan, told The Times: “We in central Government and local authorities need to continue our work to ensure that our communities are as integrated and cohesive as possible.”

Growing numbers

The total number of Muslims in Great Britain:

2004: 1,087,000

2005: 2,017,000

2006: 2,142,000

2007: 2,327,000

2008: 2,422,000

Going into Debt is a harmful thing

Debt is a Very Serious Matter, Indeed
By Asma bint Shameem

In this materialistic world where the focus has become running after the whims and fulfilling whatsoever the heart desires, we tend to lose focus on our real goals and begin taking certain matters that are forbidden or discouraged in Islaam, too lightly.

And the matter of taking loans and being in debt is definitely one of them.
And I am NOT talking about taking an “interest based” loan. That is HARAAM for sure. The kind of loan I am talking about is one without interest……one that does NOT involve riba….. The kind that is allowed, yet discouraged in Islaam.
Many people have a very casual approach to being in debt and  take out loans, not for some urgent need but, because they want to expand their businesses or keep up with others in buying new cars or furniture or other temporary luxuries of this life.

Taking loans and being in debt is a GRAVE…..GRAVE matter. Islam takes the matter of debt very seriously and warns against it and urges the Muslim to avoid it as much as possible. And yet, we don’t see it as such.

1) The Prophet (Sal Allaahu Alaiyhi wa Sallam) used to seek protection from it

The Prophet (Sal Allaahu Alaiyhi wa Sallam) used to say in his prayer: “Allaahumma inni a’oodhi bika min al-ma’tham wa’l-maghram

(O Allaah, I seek refuge with You from sin and heavy debt).”

Someone said to him: “How often you seek refuge from heavy debt!” He said: “When a man gets into debt, he speak and tells lies, and he makes a promise and breaks it.” (Bukhaari and Muslim). Read the rest of this entry »

Rememberance of Allah

Life, with all of its daily struggles, often drains us of our energy and weakens emotions and faith.  To counteract these effects it is necessary for one to seek guidance and support from our Creator.  Who else is better to help than the one who understands and knows us so intemately?

It was once given as an example during a seminar, that the carpenter who built our table knows best how much weight it can stand, how it is best used, and what will damage it.  Allah is this way with us.  He knows all about us and what we need and when we need it.  It may not seem this way to us when we are wanting to gain sucess in this life, or to be able to purchase new things and can’t, or when we are suffering from an illness or other calamities.

ipray

Many times we are so tied up with what goes on in our daily lives we forget to acknowledge all of the many, many blessings that Allah swt has bestowed upon us.  Do we see the death of a loved one as a tragedy or a reality, and possibly a cloud with a silver lining to it?  If our car is repossessed, we can see it as a hassle and big problem, or think that maybe that car was a lemon and could have caused a deadly accident and Allah in his wisdom is protecting us from that.  We cannot always  understand  the works of God or the way He directs our lives.

Is it not appropriate then that we turn to Him in remembrance, both thankful and with prayers to help guide us, keep us safe and to bless us with what is good?  There is something that we can do daily and that is thikr and supplications (du’a) .  For many of us using a small book called Husn al Muslim is both a reminder of the du’a that the Sahaba and the Prophet pbuh used to say, and a guide for us to memorize from.

For those who do not have access to purchasing the book from a store, here is a site which offers this book in pdf format.  Please visit it and see also what other links may be useful for your needs.

One drop trickles down

January 24, 2009

The Trickle-Down Effect

By Michelle Al Nasr

 drop-of-water

Have You Ever noticed a drop of water?  You know the type I am talking about – picture it.  It is the kind that drips out of the faucet, drop by drop.  It is the same one that seems so loud that it echoes as it hits the porcelain and is magnified a million times louder that it actually is when you can’t sleep in the middle of the night.  Did you ever pay close attention to how it trickles down?  Or, have you ever wondered where it went and how far it may have traveled?  I know it is a little weird,  but I have spent some serious time thinking about it; probably one of those nights I spend counting sheep.  Just imagine it for a minute, I mean really think about that single little drop of water and the journey it would take all the way  down the drain.

What would be the destination point, where would it end up?  How  large would the accumulated drops be at the end of the line or what effect would it have on the world around it once it got to where it was going?  Our decisions in life are a lot like that single drop of water.  Each thing we decide to do eventually trickles down into a gathering pool, or it hits something and has an effect on it.  When we make decisions that we know in our hearts are wrong, or make choices even though  we have doubts, it produces a trickle-down effect on our eman and on the world around us.

Wabisah ibn  M’abad narrated: “I came to the Messenger of Allah (PBUH), and he said,  ‘You have come to ask about righteousness? I said, ‘Yes.’ He said, ‘Consult your heart.  Righteousness is that about which the soul feels tranquil and the heart feels tranquil, and wrongdoing is that which wavers in the soul and moves to and from in the breast even though people again and again have given you their legal opinion (in its favor)” (Ad-Darimi).

Deep down inside, we know what is right and what is wrong; but sometimes we still choose the wrong thing.  Everyone does; we all make bad decisions sometimes.  But we do not have to let it continue, we can do something about it.

Ibn Abbas related that the Messenger of Allah (PBUH), said, “Allah has pardoned for me my people for (their) mistakes and (their)forgetfulnes s and for what they have done under duress” (Ibn Majah).

Your Creator rescues our souls and for gives! He is, after all, the Most Merciful.  Sometimes, we forget about that, especially when we make bad decisions.  Or, may be it is because we have made a lot of bad decisions.  Some people may  even feel like they have done too many  terrible things, they have gone past the point of no return-like there is no chance for change; they constantly chant their mantra’ “What’s the use at this point?” But it is never too late, and we should never feel hopeless.  There is always a way out because Allah’s Mercy, Generosity, Love and Forgiveness are endless…… for everyone.  He, the Most High, provides each of us with ample opportunities to redeem ourselves from our bad deeds and our stupid mistakes, to right our wrongs and to make better choices, with even the simplest of actions.

Allah;s Messenger (PBUH), said: “If anyone extols Allah after every salah thirty-three times, and praises Allah thirty-three times, and declares His Greatness thirty-three times, ninety nine times in all, and says to complete a hundred:  There is no god but Allah, having partner with Him, to Him belongs sovereignty and to Him is praise due, and He is Potent over everything.’ His sins will be forgiven even if they are as abundant as the foam of the sea” (Muslim).

So do not let your dreams of an everlasting Jannah trickle down the drain drop by drop, slowly cutting away at your eman.  Turn off the negatives at the source by fixing the leaks where they start.  Make the change now, because even the hardest stone will eventually show a sign of wear after the trickle-down effect has taken its toll, and the damage will be visible to all.  And just think….. it all started with only one drop.

Du’a for facing trials

January 24, 2009

Allahumma inni as ‘aluka fi’lal khayraat wa tark al-munkaraat, wa hubb al-masaakeen, wa an taghfira lee wa tarhamanee wa tatooba ‘alay. Wa in aradta bi ‘ibaadika fitnan, faqbidni ilayka ghayra maftoon.

[Oh Allah, I ask You [to enable me] to do good deed and avoid evil deed, and to love the poor, and [I ask You] to forgive me, to have mercy on me and accept my repentance. If You decree that some trial should befall Your slaves, then take me to You [i.e., cause me to die] without having me be subjected to that trial.]

Where a woman came from

January 24, 2009

“Beautiful words to the wise…Be careful if you make a women cry because Allah the most high counts her tears. A women came out of the rib of man, not his feet to be walked on, nor his head to be superior over; she came from his side to be his companion, under his arm to be protected, and next to his heart to be be loved.”-Ustadha Hedaya Hartford

Islam & The Concept of Friendship
Isa Al-Bosnee

Humans have always been social creatures and in need of friends and companions. Much of our lives is spent in interaction with others. For us Muslims who are living in a society where we are clearly a minority, the issue of choosing right companions is essential for preserving our Deen.  Befriending righteous and virtuous Muslims is an essential means for staying on the Straight Path.  Strong individuals, on the other hand, are the core of a strong community, something that Muslims should always strive for.

We all know that we were created for a specific purpose and that Allah the Most High has given us life in order to test us.  None of us will deny that we are here for a relatively short period of time and that we shall meet Allah (s.w.t.) one Day.

Once we know our purpose and our goal, we should seek ways to achieve them so as to benefit our own selves. All of us believe that Allah has sent us a Messenger (s.a.w.) and revealed to us the Qur’an, the Best Speech.

In an authentic Hadith, the Prophet Muhammad (s.a.w.) said:
“A person is likely to follow the faith of his friend, so look at whom you befriend.”(1).
The person most noble in character and dealings with fellow humans gave us a very clear message and advice in regard to friendship. We should choose the friend that is satisfied with our Deen and avoid the friend that is displeased with it. Whoever we see and are pleased with his Deen, we should befriend him and whoever we are displeased with his Deen and his manners, we ought to avoid him. There is no good in the companion who does not wish for us (from good) what he wishes for himself. There is also no good in the companion who wishes for us what he wishes for himself, if what he likes for his own soul is leading him towards destruction and Hellfire. Read the rest of this entry »
